World AIDS Day

Today is the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day, and Bloggers Unite has put together another massive action to raise awareness. Hence this post. One of our focus areas at The 1010 Project is HIV/AIDS support groups - civil society and community-based organizations that are providing hope and care to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. I've spoken before of the ways in which pov… Continue

Working Late

So we're entering Hour Eleven here at the office working on the website redesign. Gobs of new content, new ways to interact, and better ways of seeing exactly what it is that we're up to at The 1010 Project. We'll let you all know when things are ready to go, and we'll undoubtedly need feedback (positive criticisms, please!) so we can fine-tune the whole thing. Watch this space! Continue

RockAfrica

Oh man! Ngumo ye Rudo is downstairs right now warming up. They are beating those drums and making the marimbas sing! We are working very hard in these last few hours, but it's going to be a great show! www.rockafricadenver.com Continue

RockAfrica

Oh, it's coming up! RockAfrica is going to be a great advocacy event for us and the Elias Fund. In a week's time, we're going to host Hearts of Palm and Ngumo ye Rudo here at the office. I'm really looking forward to it. We're trying out a whole bunch of new media techniques to expand our reach for this event, and we really hope it'll pay off. So watch this space! Continue

Blog Action Day 2008 - POVERTY

Each year, Blog Action Day brings together a worldwide squad of bloggers - forming a giant network to promote awareness and change. Last year's theme was the environment. This year: POVERTY. And so, I have elected to make The 1010 Project and our social network part of this worldwide "web" of activists and humanitarians. We are joining the story of Blog Action Day, and the more voices that we add, the bigger the response. This reinforces The 10… Continue

The Busy

These weeks, I wake up before the sun and start running. I don't stop running until 11 pm. I like having lots and lots of work to do, and it sure makes the days blur by. I enjoy being able to...enjoy...my days. Our benefit dinner is coming up, RockAfrica is on in a months' time, I'm doing a bunch of extracurricular stuff at DU, and then there's the whole "deciding my future" thing, which involves miles and miles of applications and emails. Oh, and class. I suppose I should take care of that. O… Continue

Economics and Expectations

I've spent the past few months collaborating with our Director of Communications, Mark Mann, and with other members of the Grant Writing group (Team AwesomeAdventure) to identify new sources of funding, like foundations, and of course to scale up our current donor base. Writing grants is a very lengthy process, and I'm learning all sorts of interesting things about how to "sell" The 1010 Project to likely funders. The recent economic downturn is making our job look very tough, as illustrated by… Continue

Intern much?

So it would appear that I'm actually hanging out at 1010 for a purpose now. I'm registered my time here for academic credit. This basically means that I'll be aiming to complete at least 150 hours working for The 1010 Project. This will translate into 5 hours of academic credit. It's nice - I get to feel like I'm in class when I'm not. The 1010 Project is real-life skills, and it's nice to do it first-hand instead of reading about it in a book. Of course, I do have to pay for those credi… Continue
