Adam Delp F Bombs

No this post is not about what you might be thinking… I just wanted to get your attention. F Bombs - refers to the food, fuel, and financial crises of 2008. The poorest and most vulnerable groups and individuals have been hit the hardest. The fight against poverty has taken a step back in some respects. “Worse than the increase in the number of poor people is often the increase in depth of poverty that is experienced by households, pushing them to the edge of survival. Households left to cope… Continue

Ryan Linstrom My Holiday Letter

Dear Friends and Family, The Holidays are here! This has been a crazy year for Amber and I, and a difficult year for the whole world. As the economy continues to plummet, my thoughts are with the poorest of the poor, as they will feel the greatest impact of the downfall. Three years ago, I spent my Christmas on the island of Namiti, in Uganda. The trip, five weeks in all, could be summarized in the wise words of a 13-year-old boy named Richard who said to me as I got in a canoe on my way home,… Continue

Tim Brauhn World AIDS Day

Today is the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day, and Bloggers Unite has put together another massive action to raise awareness. Hence this post. One of our focus areas at The 1010 Project is HIV/AIDS support groups - civil society and community-based organizations that are providing hope and care to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. I've spoken before of the ways in which pov… Continue

Tim Brauhn Working Late

So we're entering Hour Eleven here at the office working on the website redesign. Gobs of new content, new ways to interact, and better ways of seeing exactly what it is that we're up to at The 1010 Project. We'll let you all know when things are ready to go, and we'll undoubtedly need feedback (positive criticisms, please!) so we can fine-tune the whole thing. Watch this space! Continue

Adam Delp Paradigm Shift: Microfinance - Recognizing the Rights of the Poor

Something I wrote a few years back... but still relevant I believe... -- Paradigm Shift: Microfinance - Recognizing the Rights of the Poor By: Adam Delp When the word “poor” is spoken or read, what word(s) come to mind? Some people think "needy", "lazy", "dependent", and "third world". What if words such as "trustworthy", "dependable", "innovative", or "value-conscious" came to mind instead? Even among development profess… Continue

Katie Sewell Don't Forget!

With all of the talk about the United States economy, have we forgotten about our global neighbors? Imagine the impact that our economy will have on those who are already living in extreme poverty. I don't want to diminish the impact that this current crisis will have on our lives yet I am struck that our media has once again forgotten to give a voice to the voiceless. Story after story we hear how middle class America is and will be affected. What about the 1.35 million children who were homel… Continue

Tim Brauhn Blog Action Day 2008 - POVERTY

Each year, Blog Action Day brings together a worldwide squad of bloggers - forming a giant network to promote awareness and change. Last year's theme was the environment. This year: POVERTY. And so, I have elected to make The 1010 Project and our social network part of this worldwide "web" of activists and humanitarians. We are joining the story of Blog Action Day, and the more voices that we add, the bigger the response. This reinforces The 10… Continue

Mark Mann A friend and connection

So in the chaos of preparing for this year's Benefit Dinner, I have managed to schedule two more very exciting events. We will be having two movie nights, one at DU and one at CCU. Since Michael Nyangi will be in town this Sunday, we wanted to give him the opportunity to speak with as many students and people as we could possibly manage. Check the events page for details to these movie nights. I am exhausted, this has been a busy week already and it is only going to get worse. However, it makes… Continue

Tim Brauhn The Busy

These weeks, I wake up before the sun and start running. I don't stop running until 11 pm. I like having lots and lots of work to do, and it sure makes the days blur by. I enjoy being able to...enjoy...my days. Our benefit dinner is coming up, RockAfrica is on in a months' time, I'm doing a bunch of extracurricular stuff at DU, and then there's the whole "deciding my future" thing, which involves miles and miles of applications and emails. Oh, and class. I suppose I should take care of that. O… Continue

Mark Mann Through inspiration from our friends

Last night we had the opportunity to host over 25 individuals at our second showing of One + One: A Human Network. If you are not aware of this film, I invite you to pay attention. This film is the hard work of many people dedicated to the work of 1010. Directed by Sid McGregor, the film is a collaboration of the Electronic Arts program at Missouri State University. After nearly a year and a half, we have the finished product and couldn't be more happy with it. This is just one example of how p… Continue

Tim Brauhn Economics and Expectations

I've spent the past few months collaborating with our Director of Communications, Mark Mann, and with other members of the Grant Writing group (Team AwesomeAdventure) to identify new sources of funding, like foundations, and of course to scale up our current donor base. Writing grants is a very lengthy process, and I'm learning all sorts of interesting things about how to "sell" The 1010 Project to likely funders. The recent economic downturn is making our job look very tough, as illustrated by… Continue

Adam Delp Kenyan Road Trip

Greetings from Nairobi Family and Friends, Fred, Jenny, and I embarked on our safari (journey) Thursday morning in our trusty Toyota Corolla. We traveled to Western Kenya to visit with one of 10/10's partners in Miwani – Kenya, near Kisumu and the shores of Lake Victoria. Along the way, we stopped at a hotel (restaurant in Kenya) for tilapia and ugali, my favorite Kenya dish. Jenny experienced Fred and I eating our meal with our hands; she wasn't so sure about it which is why she opted for chic… Continue

Adam Delp A lesson in "networking"

Greetings Family and Friends, Upon arrival here in Kenya, the first couple of days were spent celebrating Riva's arrival, planning and preparing the schedule and itinerary. On Saturday, Jenny and I enjoyed participating in the Global Education Fund's (GEF) “Leadership Scholars Program”. (www.globaleducationfund.org) This program provides scholarships to secondary school (high school) students, with a preference for young women and orphans. The s… Continue
