Hi Adam, i am running a local community based organization here in Malindi called self help alliance in poverty eradication(SHAPE AFRICA). We are in the process of organizing a community crafts exhibition in partnership with the National museums of Kenya at the Gede Ruins near Malindi, Coast Province Kenya. I hope that all join the story members who decide to spent their holidays in Kenya can visit us and also share ideas on seeking ways to work with the community to be their own agents of change towards economic development, given the availability of all the natural resources in abundance here. I hope that through the diverse experiences and knowledge and skills of join the story members, the community here can benefit, as well as everyone else because i believe every human being has something to offer. Am happy to be in Join the Story and i hope i did not overwhelm you with this first comment.

It was a pleasure meeting with you and Jenny during the two meetings. There is a lot that can happen between 10/10, ANU and GEF. We look forward to a future working together.

F Bombs

No this post is not about what you might be thinking…

I just wanted to get your attention.

F Bombs - refers to the food, fuel, and financial crises of 2008. The poorest and most vulnerable groups and individuals have been hit the hardest. The fight against poverty has taken a step back in some respects.

“Worse than the increase in the number of poor people is often the increase in depth of poverty that is experienced by households, pushing them to the edge of survival. Households left to cope… Continue

Paradigm Shift: Microfinance - Recognizing the Rights of the Poor

When the word “poor” is spoken or read, what word(s) come to mind?

Some people think "needy", "lazy", "dependent", and "third world".

What if words such as "trustworthy", "dependable", "innovative", or "value-conscious" came to mind instead?

Even among development profess… Continue

Kenyan Road Trip

Greetings from Nairobi Family and Friends,

Fred, Jenny, and I embarked on our safari (journey) Thursday morning in our trusty Toyota Corolla. We traveled to Western Kenya to visit with one of 10/10's partners in Miwani – Kenya, near Kisumu and the shores of Lake Victoria. Along the way, we stopped at a hotel (restaurant in Kenya) for tilapia and ugali, my favorite Kenya dish. Jenny experienced Fred and I eating our meal with our hands; she wasn't so sure about it which is why she opted for chic… Continue

A lesson in "networking"

Greetings Family and Friends,

Upon arrival here in Kenya, the first couple of days were spent celebrating Riva's arrival, planning and preparing the schedule and itinerary.

On Saturday, Jenny and I enjoyed participating in the Global Education Fund's (GEF) “Leadership Scholars Program”. (www.globaleducationfund.org) This program provides scholarships to secondary school (high school) students, with a preference for young women and orphans. The s… Continue
